A cool girl power theme: how does Harley (Margot Robbie) grow from her underdog position? How does her environment react? Birds of Prey answers those questions with brightly colored, thickly set action scenes. And by doing so, leave out any chance of being more than entertaining.
As the Movies Joy Joker’s sweetheart, Harley enjoyed immunity in Gotham. Whether she broke her legs with her heels or had a clown’s smile on someone’s face, she got away with anything. Once single, all these men want revenge.
A simple solution is to become the harlequin of club owner and criminal Roman Sionis (a vileine Ewan McGregor), he can use her help in finding a diamond. But Harley wants to emancipate, and does so with verve. Her feminist parody of Marilyn Monroes classic Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend is one that stays with you.
Margot Robbie ( Once Upon A Time in Hollywood ) who played Harley’s role before (Suicide Squad), uses all her guts and agility to play Harley’s crazy actions. Her energy is great, but she doesn’t have the script (Christina Hodson) and the direction (Cathy Yan).
SPICE GIRL SQUAD
Yan and Hodson based this moviesjoy 2020 film on the well-known DC Comics characters. Tough and in line with the spirit of the times is that they focus on the female heroes and make Harley the captain of a kind of Spice Girl squad; the Birds of Prey. Harley’s psychological maturation, however, is overshadowed by all grotesque action scenes, in shopping streets, in supermarkets, and on a deserted fairground. Battle scenes follow each other at such a hysterical pace that the film appears to be a succession of gurgles, glitters and guns.
A movie may be entertaining, but a movie like Joker (2019) shows that you can also give a superhero a story that is more than one-liners. And although the makers have an actress on board with Margot Robbie who can give her character such an extra layer (think of Robbie’s leading role in I, Tonya), Birds of Prey has opted for a focus on brutal violence – albeit with a cheerful, glittering edge.
